We’ve made our love of Bay Area alt-country group Half Stack well known—here’s a now-five-year-old Bandcamp Pick on their excellent debut QUITTING TIME, but they’ve been reliably churning out psych-y desert rock and twangy, glammy folk tunes as recently as 2023’s formidable album SITTING PRETTY. Make sure “Morning Rain” is on your parking lot playlist when you hit the Sphere to see Dead and Co. this summer.
Half Stack singer Peter Kegler has shifted focus to writing music with accomplished musicians Jeff Day (Calculator, Never Young) and Dylan Allaard (Freak No Hitter, Fake Fruit) in the new band Share, whose debut album HAVE ONE is one of the best releases of 2024 and one you should pre-save or pre-order now. It’s a deft mix of blistering garage rock, twee power pop, and radio-friendly proto-punk, and while it’s not out until August 9th (via Forged Artifacts), today they release another single, “It Spins.” One of the album’s more straightforward noise rock tracks, it functions as a catchall of those musical ideas, compounding longing gang vocal melodies over slow-moving, dissonant pop guitars that recall a star slowly imploding. Like the fuzzy road trip cut “County Lines” that preceded it, “It Spins” is best heard as loudly as possible, but while the former brings out the band’s fun, upbeat nature, the latter is an appropriately dizzying display of self-reflection.
