Video Premiere: James the Fifth’s “Love Life”

0

Los Angeles recording artist James The Fifth makes chirpy psychedelic rock that toes the line between surrealism and playfulness. His latest single, “Love Life,” is an upbeat, fuzzy track that brings to mind the golden age of acts like Grizzly Bear and Yeasayer. A sauntering drum groove lays the framework for erratic guitar chops, which were recorded in just one take. Accompanied by a gory video starring comedian Brent Weinbach and actor Tommy Midnight, the visuals came to life in a sickened haze while James battled post-vaccination COVID.

Of the track, he says, “I wrote ‘Love Life’ at a time when I felt like I lacked control over my patterns and choices in relationships. By then I understood in a cerebral way what I needed to change, but I felt like my emotional wiring was setting me up to make the same mistakes over and over again. The chaotic instrumental sections of the song to me represent my frustration in grappling with the problem, with an inability to verbally articulate a solution.”
